Dr. Yang Dao-Bin

Dr. Yang Dao-Bin is presently 1 of the music teachers in Hemei Elementary School, Changhua County, Taiwan, R.O.C. He retained the job but suspended the salary to pursue further education in U.S.A. In his studying period, he was taught by Dr. Cynthia Taggart, Dr. Edwin Gordon, and Dr. Judy Palac, the noted music education scholar, also the creator of music learning theory.

Since Dr. Yang returned to his motherland, Taiwan, R.O.C. with the obtainment of a Ph.D. of Music Education of Michigan State University, U.S.A., he had been devoting himself to preschool education and 9-grades school education. By giving himself to the frontline of education, Dr. Yang is practicing his dream and enthusiasm for basic music education with real action.

Enthusiasm for Music Education

Dr. Yang graduated from Elementary Education Department, Music Division, of National Taitung Teachers'College. Since he was a college student , he has been very enthusiastic about spreading music education.

In 1991, his wind music composition creation "Back mountain legend" won " National College Music Talent Prize "of Yamaha Culture and Education Foundation.
In 1992, he occupied the music supervisor in Changhau County Music Festival. After his graduation from college, he served in Chang-Yuan Elementary School in Taitung County from 1992 to 1993.
He took the military duty in Ministry of National Defense Model Band as composition creator and trumpet player. At the same time, he also served as the wind band teacher and special composition creator of Jing-He, Hai-Shan, and Tu-Chen Elementary School in Taipei County and Chuei-Feng Elementary School in Taichung County.

Dr. Yang went back to Hemei Elementary School in Changhua County and served as a music teacher after the military duty. After obtaining the Ph.D. of Music Education from Michigan State University, U.S.A, he got more enthusiastic about music teaching activity in junior high school and elementary school. He directed studying courses, published speeches, wrote studying reports, served as the director of MD papers and teacher of ensembles in many schools. He has made music teachers and learners have a whole new cognition about music.

Theory of Music Learning

After Dr. Yang Dao-Bin got Ph.D. of music education of Michigan State University in U.S.A, he returned to his country and devoted himself to children music education, art and humanity learning area. He is a good teacher with both theory and reality. He specializes in music learning theory called "Gordan Teaching Method in Taiwan" which emphasizes on the view of children and lets them think about the music learning theory -- How, Why, What, When. This teaching method of "learning from playing" is favored by teachers all the time. It is a great lesson how to integrate games into music teaching to let students smile in each class.

"Teaching music with music"

Dr. Yang Dao-Bin and Miss Lin Jia-Yu (Dr. Yang's wife) went back to the school they worked at after finishing their overseas study. They taught harder and more vividly. They abandoned the traditional teaching method-those about notation or music theory, but just taught by only performing music compositions to students.

This different type of teaching method worried the principal at first. Finally he supported it with all his effort after the good result presented by parents' admiration. "Teaching music with music" is gradually prevalent in education field in Changhua County. It is loved by students because it makes students interested in learning.

People who have watched Dr. Yang Dao-Bin and Miss Lin Jia-Yu's teaching are highly impressed and agreed with their teaching method. More and more teachers are adopting this method-"Teaching music with music".
